What is Mind?

Gregory Bateson
“Now Difference is very interesting, because—if I ask you to locate a difference, you will find that you cannot do so, because obviously it is not in this, it is not in that, it is not in the space between, and it’s not in the time between.... [Difference] is the stuff of which minds are made."
“So, if mind is a system of pathways along which transforms of difference can be transmitted, mind obviously does not stop with the skin. It is also all the pathways outside the skin relevant to the phenomenon that you want to account for.” Bateson, 1969

MindForTherapy is pursuing difference. Our friend and mentor, Brad Keeney explains that it is impossible to maintain a clear focus on an ecological understanding of human transformation and experience. So we must take steps as Bateson did towards an ecology of mind that includes more than just ourselves. So, "What is mind?" In relation to this website, mind is the collective interactions of a group of therapists and numerous others that make up the context in which we are a part. There is no way to create a list of contributors. Many have contributed to our collective "mind", including our mentors Dr. Bradford Keeney and Dr. Wendel Ray. You may contribute to Mind by particpating in our discussions and by contributing to the journals. But more so than that, we wish for you linger over the ideas and thoughts that this website conjures in your own mind.
